Looking at their base models, both of these cards fit squarely in the under-$300 MSRP class, a spot that used to belong only to AMD’s Radeon RX 500 cards and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050- and 1060-class GPUs. Like the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti that rolled out a few weeks back, the GeForce GTX 1660 is another GPU that sees Nvidia suppressing its ray-tracing/RTX aspirations to muscle in on AMD’s main foothold in video cards these days: the 1080p-bound, multiplayer-focused gamer who doesn’t have a ton of extra coin to throw onto his or her next GPU upgrade. The XFX Radeon RX 480 graphics cards put premium gaming and Virtual Reality within your reach get locked and loaded for smooth, true-to-life, stutter-free gameplay with ultra-high performance and resolution.

Sure, its “Polaris”-based Radeon RX 500-series cards were also based on aging tech, but once the cryptocurrency mining boom of 2017-2018 ran its course, Nvidia’s meat-and-potatoes GeForce GTX “Pascal” cards like the GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 were generally pricier.

On 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra, which approximates 4K gaming (something neither card is really built for), the results indicate a 35 percent gain for the RX 590 over the GeForce GTX 1660.
That said, the overclock percentages on each card are close enough to one another that the gap in power is negligible (2.5 percent on the GeForce GTX 1660, 1.25 percent on the Radeon RX 590). From the outset, we should reiterate that both the cards we tested for this benchmark—the Gigabyte GTX 1660 OC 6G and the XFX Radeon RX 590—are overclocked third-party cards that carry a unique set of specs determined by the individual companies that produced them. Really, the GeForce GTX 1660 falls square between the Radeon RX 590 above and the Radeon RX 580 below; the latter card, in places, we’re seeing for $199.
With video cards based on Nvidia’s spanking-new GeForce GTX 1660 GPU hitting store shelves this week, we’re back with another nitty-gritty card comparison. If you want a high-end gaming experience but aren’t always playing games, doing GPU mining is a great way to use your graphics card outside of gaming hours. XFX RX 580 GTS Black Edition’s large body and cooling design should translate to a GPU that doesn’t get too hot under heavy load, though in general AMD GPUs will be hotter than their Nvidia counterparts. Taste is subjective, but I was always an admirer of the original Double Dissipation design, and the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT Thicc II Ultra is one of the most beautiful graphics cards I’ve ever laid eyes on. The card’s rocking an ultra-clean, ultra-solid-looking black vibe with chrome accents, going so far as to outfit the end of the card with a chrome grille that enhances the roadster look.
XFX’s graphics card puts an overclocked, custom-cooled spin on AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 XT’s Navi” GPU. It’s worth it. The XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT Thicc II Ultra is extremely impressive and extremely fast, pushing AMD’s new flagship GPU well past the similarly priced GeForce RTX 2060 Super’s performance With its optimizations, the Thicc II Ultra inches awfully close to the $500 RTX 2070 Super’s frame rates. Despite the XFX Radeon RX 590 retailing for $60 more than the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660, the GTX 1660 took it down (to a greater or lesser extent) on most of the tests above, save for a few outliers. The way we see it, if you would have bought two of the games, it’s a break-even prospect given the performance differences between GTX 1660 and RX 590. Because these are all brand-new titles that currently retail for $60 apiece, that technically takes up to a whopping $180 off the purchase price of your card…if you care about these games, that is. (A lesser bundle comes with the Radeon RX 580 and RX 570; you get a choice of two out of the three games.)
Although the GTX 1660 does come out ahead as the value leader, thanks to its performance numbers being what they are (and the card being cheaper than the RX 590, flat out, at the moment), AMD isn’t out just yet. Here, at the 1080p and 1440p resolutions these cards are meant for, the GTX 1660 maintains a strong lead across the board, in both Bioshock and the rest of the legacy games we tested both cards on. Games like Bioshock: Infinite are usually good indicators of the true power differences you’ll see between cards; because the average frame rate is so high, the gaps in performance are made that much more obvious.
It’s high time to see how the GeForce GTX 1660 fares against its most similarly priced (and best outfitted) AMD equivalent, the Radeon RX 590. This year, the company has released two new GPUs that take a detour from RTX into the GTX line, where it sells its cards in volume: the GeForce GTX 1660 we’re discussing here, and the step-up GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. All the cards using that GPU are AMD partner creations from the likes of ASRock, PowerColor, Sapphire, XFX, and others.
Like with the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti launch, GeForce GTX 1660 cards are being offered solely by Nvidia’s card partners, such as Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, and Zotac. So, how well does the GeForce GTX 1660 stack up against the Radeon RX 590 in 1-to-1 gaming benchmarks and other testing? The mega-popular CS:GO is a game that is usually far more dependent on the CPU than the GPU to post results, but this is one test where the RX 590 barely managed to pull out ahead of the GTX 1660 in two of the three resolutions we ran it at.
With its focus on high-refresh multiplayer games, it’s no surprise that the GTX 1660, being the newer card, managed to prevail on these two above (albeit by tiny margins on Tom Clancy). Also, given the GTX 1660’s pricing, it has, like the GTX 1660 Ti, rendered the next-upstream Radeon card, the Radeon RX Vega 56 , which has failed to drop much in price over the years, irrelevant as a comparison. That is especially true when you consider that the two main selling points of the RTX cards—DLSS and ray-tracing—wouldn’t even be implemented in games for a number of months after the GPUs released. The gaming graphics card adviser website is a great place to find the top gaming graphics card website.
In the GeForce RTX 2080 and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti especially, Nvidia was stretching the furthest limits of what gamers might be willing to pay for a graphics card: more than a grand for the RTX 2080 Ti! When the GeForce RTX line of cards was announced last year (along with their, shall we say, “revolutionarily high” price points), AMD must have been equal parts intimidated and happy: the latter because AMD might have thought it finally had an opening in the GPU market. Bear in mind that there will be some modest differences among different GTX 1660 and RX 590 cards in terms of base/boost clocks, depending on how aggressive the vendor overclock.
