Where to Find Men's Skincare Products That Work

By: Dr. Valerie Rosenbaum

There’s one important question that you should consider whenever you buy men's skincare products. Are the ingredients safe? Effectiveness is of course important, but if a compound is unsafe or causing an adverse reaction, you may end up with more problems than you had in the beginning.

When they’re designed for men anti-aging skincare solutions almost always contain a sunscreen. Sunscreens are organic or synthetic compounds that block either UVA rays, UVB or both.

There are dozens of them on the market and most were never tested for safety before they were released to the public. The inclusion of a sunscreen in men's skincare products designed for daily use is questionable at best, because they tend to cause vitamin D deficiencies.

But some of the compounds, even one of the organic ones, are hazardous in other ways. Under the category of “men anti-aging skincare” I have found several products that still contain oxybenzone, even though we’ve known for several years that it increases free radical production and therefore causes cancer.

For women and men anti-aging skincare creams should counter and prevent free radical production, not increase it. The best ones undo some of the damage that has already been done.

Many researchers believe that the free radical damage that causes wrinkles and cancerous growths occurred before we reached the age of twenty. Not too many of us cared much about our skin back then. A dab of Clearasil and out the door was all that I ever thought to do.

Now, it looks like even Clearasil causes free radical production and might cause cancer because of a synthetic antibacterial ingredient known as triclosan. Many men's skincare cleansers, body washes and antibacterial soaps contain the ingredient. The compound is very stable, chemically speaking, so it builds up in the human body and in the environment.

When I learned that pleasant fact, I had to go around the house throwing away cleanser and soap by the bagful. I’ve even seen products in the men anti-aging skincare section that contain triclosan. The thing that really makes me angry is that there are safe and natural alternatives that are just as effective, if not more so.

For sunburn protection, there’s zinc oxide lotion with a 30 plus SPF. For antibacterial and antiseptic solutions, there’s honey and witch hazel extract. Men's skincare choices would be a whole lot better if companies would just focus on safety.

A new addition to the men anti-aging skincare market is a compound called Functional Keratin. It reduces wrinkles, fine lines, redness and inflammation. It increases moisture levels and skin elasticity. It has clinical evidence to back up the claims.

It’s not like the old keratin which was processed to the point that the protein chain was completely inactive. Functional Keratin is manufactured differently, so the protein can be easily used to create new skin cells.

Measured skin cell proliferation increased by as much as 160% after just three days of use and it’s completely safe. It’s a protein extracted from sheep’s wool. That’s men's skincare that you can really use.
