What You Must Know About Presidential Inauguration Tickets

By: Mark L. Robertson

The American government will issue 250,000 tickets for the Presidential Inauguration ceremony to be held on the Capitol Hill in Washington on January 20th 2009. These tickets are to be issued FREE and the government is thinking of asking Internet sites such as eBay to ban sales of tickets. Not surprising given that some brokers are asking upwards of $20,000 for a ticket – some say that $40,000 has been requested.

What do you have to do to get a free ticket ? You have to apply to your local Congressman or Congresswoman and ask them for a ticket or two ! There are such long waiting lists that many people cannot be bothered to apply and prefer to buy their tickets. Some people have been told that there are 600 in front of them! The tickets will not be released anyway until the first week in January so it is difficult to understand why ticket brokers are so confident that they can meet the demand.

Normally for these events, the ticket brokers buy them up from Congress employees who have managed to get them and have no intention of going to the ceremony but would like to make some extra cash. The organising committee is strongly discouraging this practice by threatening these employees with prosecution as it not only goes against the whole spirit of the event but also violates the ethics of Congress. Actually they want to make it a crime. Whether this will happen is anyone’s guess.

If you want to attend the parade, there should be no problem as you can just go there and watch the whole ceremony on the enormous TV screens that will be put up along The Mall. That is with the exception of the first and second blocks which are being allocated a certain number of tickets. But there is no need to pay for a ticket if you are prepared to be that far away – anyway you can follow it on the screens.

Just to give you some idea of prices, here is a rough guide. These prices are what the brokers are asking at the moment. Anything above these prices should be regarded with great suspicion. Always go through a reputable broker who will give you certain guarantees. The prices then are as follows :- Presidential Gala will cost about $2,000.This will be at the Renaissance Hotel on the evening before (January 19th). Parade tickets (for the places nearest the ceremony ) will go for $700 a piece while the actual Swearing-In could cost anything from $1,200 to $5,000 a head.

Once you do decide to buy some tickets you will need to ask about what guarantees are offered by the ticket broker. Obviously you will want to do business with a reputable agency and you can also ask to inspect their guarantee policy – if they will refund the whole cost of the ticket in the event of problems and also if they can deliver the tickets in time for the event.
