Spray Tans: What You Should Know

By: Kelly Summers

Getting a tan is a great way to keep a healthy look, but many people are justifiably afraid of the health hazards of being in the sun for too long. The most popular alternative method to have a year-round tan is by using a tanning booth on a regular basis. But there are a few things you should consider first.

We should all now be aware of the dangers of too much sun (skin cancer) and a number of safer alternatives are showing success in the market to counteract these health issues. One of the choices people are now making is to go to a salon that offers spray tanning for an almost instant, safe effect. Spray tans have also progressed in leaps and bounds in terms of the natural and even tan they can offer.

Other oils and creams that can produce a fake tan have been available for a long time but the effect they provide is not always consistent.

In fact some people have had quite poor results for one reason or another and so many of these creams have lost favour in the market place.

There are also now home spray tanning systems available but these may not be the easiest to use on your own, although regular users could save money over time. Once again, however, you are more likely to get the best results by using the services of a professional spray tanner or by going to a spray tanning salon.

Irrespective of the system you decide to use, there are some steps you can take to improve the look of your spray tan. To ensure a good clean body surface to work with, you will need to remove any dead skin by exfoliation. Fake tan applications that have been done without this vital step are easy to spot as the recipient has light patches in the tan where the dead skin has fallen of.

Afterwards apply a good moisturizer to keep your skin moist and ready to tan.

A common problem especially in the early days of self tanning creams, although it doesn't happen quite as much now, was to forget to wear gloves when applying the tan which meant that the palms turned orange and let everyone know the tan was a fake. It is also important to remember fingers, joints and feet do not need to be coated as heavily as they will become very dark and once again give the game away. This can be really embarassing so make sure you take care if you are applying a tanning cream.

If you are using a spray tanning method then you will need an old towel to wipe any excess fluid away to stop streaking (the excess tanning fluid can lead to excess colourization).

To avoid any smears, marks or cracking, you will need to relax and remain still, while the tanning agent dries - that way you will get a even colour. These agents are notoriously good at marking clothing once they have been applied so you are advised to be careful how soon you get ready afterwards and what you intend to wear.

Another point to consider is the change of clothes you will need once the tan has been applied. Take some dark clothes along - that way you avoid any staining.

By taking a few precautions and knowing a little bit more about the tanning process, it should be easier to have a spray tan that is safe and available all year round without anyone knowing what it is you are doing.
