Planning for Retirement with Poor Health

By: Moses Wright

It is what many of us have planned for throughout our working, adult years. We envision it to be a time of relaxation and reflection, a time for us to attempt things we've always wanted but didn't have the chance to at earlier points in our lives. We hope that by now that our children are independent and no longer need us to support them. Retirement is a time when we can pay more attention to fulfilling our dreams.

Most of us are happy that we have time to ourselves, but we should know that health will grow to become one of the main concerns among those in this age group. It is possible that your retirement was forced on you because of health related concerns, and if not in many cases you might find that your health is not quite what it used to be now that you are aging.

For many, health was the main concern that led to them deciding on retirement and it can be the same for you. One has to deal with the prospect of getting smaller pensions than expected when compelled to retire. This can pose a problem for many. With a smaller income being brought into the home it can be very hard to pay your monthly bills. However, if you are prepared for your retirement you will have an easier time supporting yourself during your golden years.

If health issues were your main reason for early retirement taking on a part time job might not be a feasible option for you. However, if you are healthy enough you always have the option of working in a different field, maybe a less stressful one or one that only requires you to work a few hours a day as opposed to working an eight hour day. Freelancing is an alternative avenue to consider. This is a great way for you to work only the hours you want to work. It is a viable option to earn extra disposable income and there is lesser pressures involved.

Whatever your decision regarding returning to your job may be, it will be affected by how well you've planned for your upcoming retirement. Also, your health should always be the top priority in any situation. Never over do your work in order to make ends meet. If you health issue seems to be worsening then your only option should be to stop the new job and either find something better suited for you or give up working all together.

Other possibilities for retirees returning to their jobs is due conflict of needs between food, fuel or medicine. This could be due to the fact that they were made to retire early and thus, shortchanged on their pension plans. It could be a result of proper planning for retirement or bad management. When one is made to retire early due to health issues, facing financial difficulties is a common situation.

Should you face overwhelming problems with financial and health issues when you have retired, you should make this known to your local elderly service agency. It is possible that they can help you in finding federal funding to assist you with your individual needs. For example, help with the cost of medications, transportation and even heating and cooling costs. If they cannot be of assistance to you they might be able to help direct you to someone that can help you.
