Filling Spaces

By: Peter Velikanov

In the past, houses used to look the same. Rooms were the same, too, irregardless of function. But throughout the years, style has evolved. Now, no two things are exactly alike. Even women are scared to go out and see someone wearing the same thing as they are. That said there is always a way, and not just one way, to have almost anything personalized and unique so that it fits your style. From clothes to cars, and yes, don't forget the houses and the rooms inside it.

In hotels, they have several types of suites that range from hundreds to thousands of dollars, depending on the amenities it offers. Now, you may not be the heir or heiress to any hotel chain, but you have every little thing you need to give your house a 180-degree and turn it into a 5-star residence. You can even make every room have a different look or theme. It's easy.

To get you started, here is a list of rooms commonly found in every house with corresponding ideas on how you can decorate them.

Living room

Go for warm or neutral colors on the walls. It is much easier to change the look every now and then this way. Furniture that is both stylish and functional is absolutely a great find. Make sure that they are comfy, too, especially if guests frequent your home. Place interesting little knick-knacks on top of the coffee table to entertain your guests. Put huge vases wherein you can put likewise huge beautiful flowers in it in corners of the house. Be more cautious if you have kids running around. A wonderful light source is also a good idea for decoration. You can choose from Victorian styles that look like there is a story behind each piece of work to new age designs that are mostly made of metal. Carpets and rugs are great to add to the feel of coziness in the room. And if you want to hang something on the wall, make sure that it is on the eye level.

Bedroom

Your bedroom should be all about you. This is the place where you could express yourself without worrying of what others might say. So by all means, adorn your room with all things that spells Y-O-U! Though there are still things that are considered as musts. Go for a comfy bed that you almost don't want to leave each morning. Paint the walls with either your favorite color or pastel colors that are soothing to the eyes. If you have collections, then you can showcase them in your room. This way, only very important people can get access and the exclusivity of your collection remains the same.

Kitchen and/or Dining Place

Bright colors are great inside a kitchen, especially if you usually have breakfast in here. They help you go through your day with a happy disposition. You can also buy a vase. Make sure you put fresh flowers into it each day.

Toilet and Bath

Since this is where you refresh yourself, then refreshing colors should cover the walls. You may also get yourself hooks that have cute cartoon characters in them, like ducks for your towels. As for the toiletries, you may put them in colorful little drawers. Paintings are also good in the bath. But go for paintings with relaxing views. Candles are very romantic but make sure that they don't replace your regular light. You need a good amount of light to avoid slipping.

Workplace

Since this is a place full of seriousness, you can hang pictures of fun memories in black-and-white on your walls. They remind you of the good times and yet they still complement the room's atmosphere.

Attic

This is the most neglected place because not many people hang around here. But really now, you don't need to fully decorate your attic. You can just make it cozy and clean. Since the attic is where you usually store old stuff, you can arrange pieces of furniture so that each time you'd go into the attic it would feel like stepping into another time. If you are wondering where to put the boxes of old things, you can simply pile them up. Hang old pictures around the room to have some sort of melancholic feel.

Guestroom

The walls might as well be painted with neutral colors since one cannot say that the guests share the same liking for the color purple. To assure that the guest is comfortable, warm colors on the walls is a good idea. Don't bother too much on expensive works of art. What are the odds that the guest will not like the painting?
