A Crucial Moment In Time

By: Terrence Aubrey

Like a bulldozer in beautiful garden mankind has forged ahead, developed and improved for a small minority " The Standard of Living". It becomes clear that these improvements carry a very high price. It becomes clear that the direction that the human race has been travelling for so long is unsustainable and completely out of balance with both the planet and the untold millions of life forms that we share it with. Where do we go from here?

Climate Change is an expression I do not like. It is to tidy. What this expression covers, is the fact the one species of life upon this planet is actually very close to destroying all. Yes us, Human Beings. The Crown of creation. How did this happen? Overnight while we slept? Because we voted in the wrong politicians? No, we have been traveling this road for a very long time and now here we are in this situation.

It seems clear that there is only one species of life on this planet that is completely out of harmony with creation, but have we actually even now, understood that fact? We really need leadership, inspired leadership right now. I,m sorry but sorting the rubbish and buying a smaller car will not be enough. We have to change radically our way of life and our expectations. Do you know that the way of life we have come to expect in the west is actually impossible for all of mankind? That there are simply insuffiecent resources on this planet for all to share this way of life we consider normal in the developed world?

We humans seem to have a uniqueness in that we do not take only that which we need, but that which we want. It is a distinction that sets us apart from all the life forms with whom we share this planet? Our entire thrust and development throughout the ages has generally been from a standpoint of greed and selfishness. Our huge desire to improve and move forward has been fundamentaly flawed from the very beginning. We made a presumption, a long, long time ago that the only consideration for our action should be want, ambition and progress and that the consequences of our actions were largely unimportant. That the world was a huge thing capable of absorbing whatever mess we created in our trail.

We did not know. Our parents brought us up within values they thought to be correct. Get a good education, career. Find a nice lady, make a family. No one considered that we were going the wrong way. That the way of life that we were perpetuating was in actual fact insustainable, wrong and lost. Somehow a very long way back we detached ourselves from the very world that we live upon and in reality share and depend upon with countless life forms that even now we are in many ways ignorant of.

Somehow and at sometime it seems we lost something. Lost a quality, a sixth sense if you like that so many life forms with whom we share the planet still have and clearly we are much the poorer for this loss. It is as though we have detached ourselves from the rest of creation and nature and believe its only function and use is to enable us to develop the world to our wishes. Do we now even see where we have gone wrong. Do we really accept that the direction we took so long ago was the wrong way? Have we become humbled sufficiently to change our ways, I mean really change our ways? Are we capable of retracing our steps and changing our values? Are we ready to appreciate, I mean really appreciate the beauty of this world in its entirety and begin to understand the inter connectivity and inter dependence of all life on this planet? No clearly we have not individually changed that much at all and in reality these changes, if they are to happen will take generations to come about. Do we have that time?

Will we rely on our political leaders, our scientists and Industrialists to come up with solutions? Just one moment, are these not the very people that have helped create the problem? Lets look at the scientists, to what extent have they improved life on earth and to what extent have they harmed it? We suffer much from the arrogance and egotism of the scientific community. Take the top ten scientists alive right now and put them in a room,a vacuum and ask them to create from nothing, something, anything, even a grain of sand. Can they? Certainly they cannot. Now should this not be a humbling experience. Should it not lead to an appreciation of the magnificence of creation? So by what right do they decide they will change, alter,or modify creation? Is this meddling not an act of pure arrogance? Do we really need them to try to make a better tomato, or a better anything when it is clear they have no idea of the repercutions, or side effects of this meddling?

There is a theory that the earth is itself a sentient being and that it will ultimately protect itself and strive to maintain a balance, could this be true? Have you noticed that the weather has changed? It is almost as an effort to dissipate the pollution and poison we are pumping out, spread it, weaken its effect. Now if this belief, or theory is true we have a big problem. The root and cause of our problems lie not with sea life, nor any of the countless millions of lifeforms with whom we share this planet. No the problem lies with us, the Human Race. If this theory is true we have a big,big problem?

How did we become so? why have we evolved in such an unbalanced and lop sided way. Why for so long have we not been able to see the dangers in our reckless and careless attitude to our planet and all life upon it? It is as a species we have evolved in an incomplete way. Someplace, somehow we made a mistake, or worse lost some inborn and natural knowledge. We have developed industrially and technologically at phenomenal speed, but it seems that our spiriual & awareness qualities have lagged well behind. We seem to have evolved and developed in a very unbalanced way. Is this at the root of our problems.

Would an enlightened advanced species merrily cut through the very branch of the tree they sit on? What kind of definition of intelligence is this and yet in reality is this not the human condition? Has this not been what in fact the human race has been doing for countless generations?

I personally believe that there is a solution, that a balance will be restored and that this creation is to magnificent to be destroyed. If the planet does have some kind of consciousness and will do all neccessary to protect itself, where does that leave mankind? From that perspective we become the parasite no.....
