Threaded inserts are used for saving the installation material from cracking and very much handy for use in various applications. They are made from various materials such as metals like brass and copper and plastics like PTFE and PVC. They can be molded or pressed into different materials with help of various methods specifically designed for that material or application. Manufacturers of threaded inserts have to comply with the various standards such as ANSI etc. to produce inserts for telecommunications, aerospace, medical products, instrumentations, plastic and other industrial applications.

Installation methods for every type of threaded inserts are different. Most commonly used methods are pressed-in, molded-in, thermal, epoxied-in, self tapping, threaded hole and ultrasonic. Various manufacturers produce customized threaded inserts for their numerous clients as per their choice of method to insert them in to the base materials.

There are many types of base materials used for the inserts such as ceramic, plastic, metal, rubber and wood. Inserts designed for plastic base material are inserted with help of ultrasonic and thermal methods. Specialized or exclusive threaded inserts can be made or customized for the use in proprietary base material and installation method.

The internal thread used in the inserts has various specifications or diameters that are measured in inches and metric units. The insert length also varies as the standard length measurement of the hole should be twelve times or the same as internal pitch length. You can find threaded inserts in form of kits with assorted sizes of the same kind of inserts or you can purchase a thread repair kit that includes the inserts, taps, drill bits and other tools helpful for the installation of the inserts.

Metal threaded inserts in various metals have different types of finishes and attributes such as aluminum inserts are lighter but not as strong as steel. Aluminum is corrosive resistant and malleable. Brass, on the other hand is good in strength with resistance to high and cold temperature ductility and bearing properties. Metals are usually good thermal and electricity conductors. Threaded inserts are also available in alloy and other popular proprietary metals such as Inconel® and Monel® that exhibit good resistance against carbonization and corrosion. These branded materials are used for manufacturing threaded inserts for specific applications such as nuclear steam generator tubing and heat exchangers etc. They are also used in sulfuric or hydrofluoric acids and alkalis because they have high strength to resist corrosive media. Other common metals used for making inserts are titanium for aerospace and medical products manufacturing industries. Many grades of steel, stainless steel and hardened steel are also used for making inserts for various industrial applications.

Non-metallic materials that are used for making threaded inserts are various types of plastics such as FRP and PVC. Some of the other materials are nylon, rubber, PVDF and PTFE. Threaded inserts are also found in various types of finishes such as anodized, black oxide, chrome, tin, phosphate, silver, zinc chromate, nickel and gold plated. These finishes are applied to make the inserts highly reflective, wear and corrosion resistant or for decorative purposes only.
