If you are a mother of a teenage child, very committed to guiding your ward to success then this is what you should be reading. And others who are confused about giving advices to achieve success are also directed here.
Let me tell, guiding someone on the way to success is not easy, in fact it's tougher than achieving success yourself, because in that case you can falter but in this situation you can not as guides don't falter. So I come in with some basic techniques to help you out.
First and foremost is to ensure that both of you, the guide and the ward are committed to each other and have complete faith in each other. You need time for that and some healthy relationship going on between the two of you for example if a mother guides a child it's the best.
The next step is to make your ward understand what success is, what he exactly wants and how to get it. It is your duty to clear all his confusion and apprehension and give him a clear view of his destination.
A guide is much more than a guide. You have to be his best friend. You have to encourage him all the way. He should get his confidence from your trust. You should appreciate him all the way in all the little achievements he gets. And you should always be there as his critic to help him correct his mistake and save him from faltering.
We know that achieving success is a long term process, there would be many ups and downs on the way, and a guide has to be with his ward all through, remember when the going gets tough, you have to reinstate his confidence even if you are feeling low. And you don't have to let him lose focus when diversions occur. Your ward will be affected by what he finds on the way but you should keep your mind and stay in control and help him also stay in control.
There are many more do's and don'ts, the list is endless, but I'll like to draw your attention to something very important. You have to be very clever while putting across your instructions to him. He should not feel that he is being instructed. You have to be subtle. For example: it's advisable never to use 'you should do this'. Rather try using 'Why don't we do this' or 'I think we should try it'. This makes a lot of difference.
Remember it's a journey to his destination which both of you are undertaking. You have to guide him but as far as possible don't make him reliant on you. He has to be self confident. Let him find his own way, let him falter and let him try again and again, but don't let him give up. You have to make him learn for himself. He cannot be dependent on you and take his mission for granted.
At last you have to show him the way but he has to work for it. Your role is to be with him all through the way, teach him how to reach there but most importantly teach him how to be there on his own.
