This current verse is the opening direct reference to baptism within the complete Scriptures. By using the phrase “In those days”, the writer Matthew is placing his account into it’s historical situation. He is in addition revealing to his contemporaries about years that had since passed, and was most likely writing to his readers a prolonged time after the dealings that he reports. So that we can discover which days Matthew is writing to his contemporaries about, we are required to study the preceding chapters.

In the beginning of his gospel, Matthew brands it “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ” (Matthew 1v1). At this point Matthew states his purpose - to let somebody see The Lord Jesus Christ as a actual person that lived at a definite period, was born to particular mother and father, and had the office and prominence of “Christ”, the anointed Messiah or Saviour. The rest of the first chapter talks of the lineage of Jesus, and furthermore a concise portrayal of how Mary got pregnant: “she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” (Matthew 1v18)

It is in chapter 2 that we begin to glimpse the detailed events that Matthew makes use of in order to place his writings into it's chronological period. The historical events shown include:
· Jesus was born in Bethlehem (King David’s historical home) “in the days of Herod the king” (Matthew 2v1)
· Wise men came out of the east in the direction of Jerusalem, wondering “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” (Matthew 2v1-2)
· The wise men journeyed for the reason that, in their words, “we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him” (Matthew 2v2)
· King Herod asked the wise men at what instance the star had appeared (Matthew 2v7) and discovered that it was around two years earlier (Matthew 2v16). It is feasible however that he overcompensated in an effort to be sure that the baby Jesus was murdered, thinking that the heavenly body had actually appeared at His conception about 9 months earlier.
· Herod sent out the edict with the intention of all of the children less than the age of 2 within Bethlehem along with the whole of the adjoining country must be killed. This was his endeavor to make sure that barely a single infant, the baby Jesus, was additionally slaughtered. (Matthew 2v16)
· Following the visit of the wise men, Joseph escorted Mary along with the baby Jesus to Egypt in a hurry, seeing that he had been warned in relation to Herod's plans through an angel. (Matthew 2v13-14)
· While the family were in Egypt, King Herod died and Joseph was told to go back toward Israel along with “the young child”. (Matthew 2v19-20)
· When King Herod was dead, his son Archelaus ruled Judaea instead. (Matthew 2v22)

Plainly, the aposple Matthew places the events within the time of the Lord Jesus Christ within the situation of who was ruling Judaea, and certain of the things that they had done. This would most probably locate the birth of the newborn child within a few days or weeks from the instruction that Herod the king had given to have him and all other babies in and around Bethlehem killed. It is probable that some of Matthew’s audience had lost a baby, brother or sister in this instant and possibly will associate the description of Matthew directly to events within their individual families. It was into these times in their recent past that John the Baptist had appeared, preaching as well as baptising.

John the Baptist was not preaching inside the temple or other places of worship, but in the wilderness. Maybe he was banned in the temple for some reason - the most likely explanation was the preaching that he contributed. To get additional evidence of this, see also v7 3.

Let’s have a look at the message that he taught, as discovered in the small number of verses that follow the present one:

· Repentance was commanded to each and every one (v2)
· The “kingdom of heaven” was at hand - almost to be exposed (v2)
· John the Baptist saw his peculiar office as laying the foundations in support of the ministry of the Lord, sowing the land, getting everything ready, and making His channel a little simpler. (v3)

Without a doubt, well from the beginning of the biblical writings about baptism, repentance from sinful ways was trapped within the teaching of baptism. This idea of repentance and baptism was preparing every person who heard the teaching for the pending ministry of the Lord Jesus.
