For succeeding in yellowfin tuna fishing, the first quality you require is you should never be a doubter but should be a believer. However, your belief should be based on a solid knowledge of the fishing methods and techniques. You may not have the required experience but your knowledge must help you suitably to take the right decisions at the right moment. Therefore, you are advised to keep updating your knowledge so that you can boldly face the situations when you venture out on the seas.

The yellowfin are one of the most commercially used varieties of tuna fish. They usually like warm waters. They have a heavy body with silvery color and their backs are blue-black. Their white-spotted bellies and bright yellow dorsal and anal fins make them very attractive. Some of this yellowfin tuna grow up to nine feet length and 400 pounds weight. Yellowfin of about 100 pounds are very common.

The most commonly used yellowfin fishing methods are the long line method and the purse seine method. However, more than the commercial aspects, the fishing for yellowfin is a great sport because of the agility, speed, fighting spirit, tenacity and size of these fish. Yellowfin are commonly available and the fact that they are eager to take a hook makes this variety of tuna a favorite variety for many.

While catching yellowfin tuna fish, you must remember that they will fight with you tenaciously and fiercely when they are caught. If you take the help of a charter boat that is equipped with all the necessary equipments including the recommended safety devices, and if you also have the help of the experienced captain and crew, you are safe. However, if you choose to have a private boat, you should ensure that you have the right equipments and safety devices. A 50-pound class, two-speed trolling reel, a thick rod, and a line in the 25-50 pound test range is essential. You need hooks of sizes of No.9. or 10 for using live or dead baits.

When you venture out for yellowfin fishing, you should go beyond 10 kms. into the sea. You should also observe the areas in which a lot of diving birds are active. These diving birds will be hunting for scraps of bait fish and their presence will indicate that yellowfin are available nearby. You can also look for the presence of dolphins, whales and other similar large animals because yellowfin fish like to hang around these mammals.

You can have a good catch of yellowfin tuna if you venture out in the early morning hours or late afternoon hours because tuna prefers low lighting. Either trolling or drift fishing method can be tried. In trolling, you go in search of the tuna and in drift fishing, you keep your boat in anchor and wait for the tuna to arrive. Trolling must be done at a speed of 5 to 9 miles per hour, and you can use either live bait or artificial lures. You should remember to let more than hundred yards of your line behind the boat during trolling. When you observe that the line is becoming slack, you can make out that yellowfin is approaching the boat. You should be ready for its tenacious and fierce fight when you try to catch it.
