My dog is great. I love my dog and bring him everywhere I go. Until recently my dog, Roscoe slept in my bed. The truth is, I didn’t even own a dog bed. Some success in dating has changed my standpoint of Roscoe sleeping in my bed.
The day I first brought home a dog bed, Roscoe looked at me like I was completely crazy. I’ve not much doubt that he assumd that the bed was intended for me. Clearly he had no plan of going from a comfortable Queen sized bed in favor of a dog bed.
Day 1 - I attempted to show him how relaxing it was by me lounging on it. Of course, when he saw me lying on it he assumd that I was playing with him and it turned into play time rather than try out the new bed time. I tried for about a half hour and then gave up. I’m a lightweight and freely admit it.
Day two- I was determined to get him to use the dog bed. I locked the door to my bedroom about the time he normally puts himself to bed thinking it would force him to check out the dog bed which I laid out next to the door. A few befuddled looks, a snort later and the dog decided he was more than happy to sleep on the couch that night. Roscoe triumphs once more.
Day 3 - At bed time I took the dog bed into my bedroom and put it at the end of my bed and locked the door. Whenever he attempted to get on the bed I informed him he wasn’t supposed to. The whimpering melted my heart and I stopped after about ten minutes. Yes, I am a sucker and am proud of it. He wins another time.
Day 4 - Now I was positive I had the key. I geniously positioned all his favorite toys on the dog bed and watched him play with them. I was positive he would get tuckered out and fall asleep on it. I watched in great delight. He played and he played. And he continued to play. I started reading a book. Before shutting off the light to go to sleep I wanted to see him enjoying his dog bed, so I sat up and discovered that Roscoe was fast asleep…on my bed. He outplayed me once more.
Day five - Some jokes at my expense and some recommendations from my family and friends and I was determined to succeed in getting Roscoe to sleep on his dog bed. I took a handful of his favorite dog treats. He goes nuts for them (almost like how I feel about vanilla ice cream I guess). I told him to sit down on the floor and I gave him a dog snack. I told him to stand up and he got a cookie. Roscoe was listening to all my orders and receiving treats.
I had Roscoe move onto his dog bed and I gave him a dog snack. I told him to be seated on it and he acquired one more cookie. I then instructed him to lay on it and he got another treat. I rubbed his belly and he curled up on the bed loving the attention. Could it be? Would he stay?
Sure thing, he stayed. He wound up sleeping on the bed all night. In fact, I think he had fun with it. Perhaps it was the distance away from my snoring that did it. He slept the whole night on his dog bed. And now it is now five weeks later and he's slept each night on his dog bed regardless of where in the house I put it. It required just a little pushiness but now I sleep in my bed and Roscoe sleeps in his dog bed. All is correct in our cheerful home.
