Though Tuna fishing has become one of the most popular and favorite fishing expeditions, there is definitely a science to the way this is approached. It is a salt water fishing expedition but the efficiency with which it can be carried out can be enhanced if aggressive and innovative techniques are adopted. Such techniques will make things propitious for tuna fishing.

When you consider the varieties of tuna that are mostly fished, they are Albacore and the yellow fin tuna. Yellow fin tuna fishing is economically important. The yellow fin tunas live in all the warm sea waters throughout the world.

Yellow fin tuna fishing is considered a favorite sport because they are huge in size and have got a high speed of movement in water. It added to their characteristics, are their tenacity and fighting spirit. People prefer yellow fin tunas for their taste also. They are attractive with silver color with blackish backs. These finas have white spotted bellies. They are called yellow fin tuna because they have these bright yellow fins. The yellow strips run the entire length right from their eyes to their tails.

People use large seine fishing nets and the fishing lines used are a mile long. Since tuna fish is ferocious, it is better if you have or hire charter boats equipped with all the required fishing gears. Tuna fishing is undertaken as a group but there are some individuals who undertake this as an individual sport. These individuals must gather and keep ready items like huge hooks, strong lines, steel reels and a sturdy fishing rod.

Whether you do tuna fishing as a group or as an individual, locating the tuna fish is easy. Since they create a lot of surface disturbances due to their movements and since many dolphins and birds are found to roam around the tuna fish, you can easily locate them. You can adopt the drifting strategy or trolling strategy to catch them. Drifting is nothing but throwing large chunks of living bait to attract them and trolling is adopted by slowly dragging a baited hook in the water to attract these fish.

However, the main thing you should remember is that tuna fishing is more difficult than we expect. You should learn a few techniques before you venture into it.

- Experts advise that you must control your speed while you do tuna fishing. The recommended speed for trolling is 5 to 8 miles per hour. Experts also advise a 'W pattern' for trolling. Multiple lures and presented and if the lures are splashy, sparkling and shiny, they are sure to yield better results. Your aim is to make the tuna falsely think that it has got a school of bait fish.

- You should take a cue from Mother nature to have a good catch of tuna fish. Diving birds provide a good clue to identify the location of these fish. If diving birds are seen, it shows that you have schools of bait fish around. The presence of bait fish will show that the tuna is somewhere nearby. If you also see dolphins or sharks, you can conclude that tuna will be somewhere close because, in general, tuna travel along with them in large schools.

- According to seasons also, you can determine how you can catch tuna. In warmer periods, tuna can be found near the surface of water. They are also fond of low light and hence when there is a low light also, you can easily find them. Winter and colder climates will make tuna hunt in deeper waters and hence catching them during such periods will be difficult.
