Platinum - A Great Choice For Wedding Rings

Platinum is a very popular choice of metal for wedding rings these days, and is seen as a more fashionable and modern alternative to the traditional ring metal of gold. Many people think of platinum as a new metal for wedding rings, but this is not the case and it has been around for a very long time. Platinum became more and more popular as a metal for rings in the Edwardian period (the reign of King Edward VII of England from 1901-1910), when new techniques for working with it came into existence. The invention of the oxy-acetylene torch allowed jewellery makers to work with the metal much more easily, and to create more intricate designs than ever before. It also prompted a massive growth in the use of the metal for jewellery, and it was by far the most popular choice of metal for wedding rings and also for many other types of jewellery in the Edwardian era.

It is frequently used in jewellery because it is very ductile and is even more ductile than gold. Ductile means that it is possible to draw it into a fine wire. This ability to be drawn into a fine wire makes it suitable to create more intricately detailed wedding ring designs than could be achieved with gold. It is also a very strong metal and resists wear very well. The silver colour of the platinum is very good for setting off diamonds by showing off the colour of the diamond with its neutral colour and by making them appear to sparkle even more, and is possibly better than gold in this respect. Platinum is also a highly unreactive metal when it comes to chemical reactions, which means that it doesn't tarnish by reacting with oxygen or other chemicals in the atmosphere and will therefore keep its shiny quality.

People who have allergies to nickel in their jewellery should seriously think about choosing platinum for their wedding ring, since rings made from it contain no nickel. Nickel is often mixed with gold to form an alloy but the nickel can cause an allergic reaction and skin irritation in some people. In fact platinum is used in medical devices because the body tolerates it well with very few adverse reactions.

Aside from jewellery, platinum has many other uses, in particular as a catalyst. It will allow chemicals, for example gases, to chemically react more easily without the platinum being affected or reacting in any way. It remains unaffected after the reaction and will carry on working with more chemical reactions. A very common use of platinum in this way is as an exhaust catalyst in an automobile, and most modern exhausts contain this metal. It is also used as a catalyst in the chemical industry for several industrial chemical processes.

When you buy a platinum ring, you are buying a very special piece of jewellery which will last for a very long time and in most cases will outlive the wearer by many years. You can be sure that even in many years to come, it will still look great.
