Shared web hosting is a hosing service in which many webmasters shares one server. Each webmaster is allotted a space on the server. Shared web hosting is the cheapest option compare to the other types of web hosting
The system administration is shared by a lot of people. Most applications will work in a shared hosting. Shared web hosting has several usage limits including space, bandwidth, and etc. The webmaster can only host as many websites up the space allotted by the web hosting provider. If the webmaster exceeded the allotted bandwidth, the web hosting provider will stop providing service to his websites. There are two types of shared web hosting including name based virtual hosing and IP based virtual hosting. Name based virtual hosting has another name called shared IP hosting. In name based virtual hosting, there are several virtual hosts that appear under different hostnames on a server. When someone requested the website, the browser will send a signal to the server through HTTP/1.1. In the HTTP/1.1, there is a part that mentions the hostname. When the web server receives the signal, it will know which website to display to the visitor. IP based virtual hosting is commonly called by people as dedicated IP hosting. In a dedicated IP hosting plan, each host is assigned with a unique IP address. The web server has several physical network surfaces. The server determines which site to show to the user by referencing the IP address. Dedicated IP hosting has a its own secure socket layer (SSL) certificate while the name based hosting uses a shared certificate. Dedicated IP hosting is more expensive because each user is assigned with a unique IP.
Shared web hosting has an administration panel which is used to control the domains. Cheap web hosting plan may used its own administration panel. Expensive web hosting plan used a better administration panel such as Cpanel. The Fantastico is Cpanel allows you to install different applications on your websites. Fantastico has many scripts which can be used to install blogs, forums, e-commerce store, templates, help desk software and etc. Some cheap web hosting plan uses Cpanel as the administration panel but limit the applications which you can use. For example, the included Cpanel will only offer a limited applicated. The Cpanel also may not have a Fantastico application.
If your website has a lot of traffic, you can sign up for the virtual private server or dedicated hosting. Virtual private server features large space and bandwidth. There is a limit imposed on the space and bandwidth offered by the virtual private server. If you have a bigger budget, you can subscribe the dedicated hosting plan. The cost for a dedicated hosting plan subscription is approximately $500 per month.
