If you sometimes find that you are paralyzed during sleep and you cannot move then you are suffering from sleep paralysis. Everyone experiences sleep paralysis at some stage in their life. The underlying factor of sleep paralysis is that of partial consciousness. The attacks occur when dreaming you are suddenly woken from your sleep and your brain responds much faster than your body. The reason for this is that the transition from being asleep to full consciousness is meant to be gradual and not sudden. If something suddenly wakes you up whilst you are having a dream then paralysis is likely to set in. Being paralyzed during sleep is actually meant to be a protective measure for you. It is meant to prevent you from responding to things that are not there.

During sleep paralysis, you remain half awake and half asleep. You find that you cannot move. Getting panicky only worsens the situation. If you panic, you might hallucinate that there is something evil in the room. You might see grotesque figures or you might imagine that something is trying to kill you. This is pure hallucination, created by a terrified mind. Unfortunately, it could drive many people from having delightful lucid dreaming experiences.

If you've never experienced sleep paralysis you might wonder what the fuss is all about. For those who have however the resultant panic attack and fear that grips you will definitely leave you looking for ways of stopping sleep paralysis. This neurological condition affects nearly everyone at one time or another. Its only when the attacks become more frequent that you should worry.

To be able to stop sleep paralysis it might help to know what it is caused by. Then by avoiding these things the incidents can be reduced or totally gotten rid of. Basically this condition manifests itself during the times when you are experiencing a dream and you are suddenly interrupted. When this happens you might find that you cannot voluntarily control your muscles you are in fact momentarily paralyzed.

Sleep paralysis is not harmful physically, but it can leave you feeling tired and restless when you wake in the morning. The resulting lack of sleep will then trigger more incidents and if they do become frequent then you have to consider sleep paralysis treatment. The question to ask though is, is there a treatment for this condition.
