It's no secret that traditional media is becoming less and less popular as time goes on. For example, Newspaper readership is at an all time low and magazines are losing subscribers at an alarming rate.
Meanwhile, we're told the number of people who watch TV or spend time browsing the web on PCs and smartphones is increasing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. It would seem people prefer rich media content and interactivity is playing a bigger role in how we consume media.
Digital signage network operators have been quick to notice and adapted to capitalize on this phenomenon. Many screen networks now offer interactivity in various forms. Some let viewers interact directly with screens using their smartphones. Viewers can trigger specific content by using SMS, Bluetooth or via downloadable software application. These applications require the user to go through a series of steps to affect the content playing on screen.
Other systems, like the Navori digital signage platform, can also be configured to react to external triggers like motion sensors, RFID tags or predefined database events. In this case content is triggered automatically without any conscious interaction. The content displayed on screen can be affected by the weather, sales figures or the proximity of a specific product. Results can be as simple as showing an ad for umbrellas on a rainy day or displaying an ad for gloves when someone walks by while carrying a set of matching boots.
In many ways, this is very similar to delivering targeted ads to internet users. As digital signage technologies become "smarter", so will ad delivery. And that's a very good thing for the savvy marketer.
