When you're playing online poker, it is hard to use the same strategies you employ when you're face to face with your opponents. You can't see the players and therefore, you can't learn to read their expressions or get to know their habits. One online poker strategy that beginners to online poker employ is to start off with low limit games. This will give you the confidence you need in beating players at a lower level of skill. It is best to start off in this manner because you do need more skill in order to beat higher skilled players at higher pots.

The reason this strategy works is that most of the players at this level are beginners. They pay attention to their own hands, rather than the hands of the other players at the table. It doesn't matter if you are in the pot or not, they will play their hands in the same way. Just play a straightforward game that will help you win. Don't try any bluffs and bet aggressively when you know you have a good hand.

There are no strict guidelines to follow when using strategy in online poker. You have to learn to think for yourself. In any poker game there is no specific strategy that will work in all situations. Basically you have to adapt your strategy to meet the challenges of each hand. Some poker rooms will display the hands of the losing players and this will give you some insight into how to judge whether a player has a winning hand. When you do win against someone that called you to the river or if you turned a lucky draw, you can request a player history to see what hand the player had. The main thing is that you must have confidence in your abilities.

Becoming good at poker means you have to practice although luck is involved here too. You do have to keep your ego in check when you are in a winning streak. In every game there has to be a winner and losers. You won't become a winner overnight because you will win some games and lose some. In fact, when you first start, you will probably lose more games than you win. Keep track of your statistics so you can analyze your game and see the type of game you play best.

Some of the mistakes you have to avoid when playing online poker are:
- Don't play too many hands. It is all right to fold and you don't have to play every hand.
- Don't play in games that you can't afford. Stick to low limit games until you learn how to play and never bet above your bankroll.
- Don't get too emotional when playing the game. You will have to play against opponents that are annoying, but you should never let them get to you.
- Make sure you understand the pot odds.
- Think in terms of four suits in a deck of cards, rather than the colors red and black.
- Learn to use the proper etiquette of poker.
- Play your own game. Don't try to imitate players you have seen on TV or other players at the table.
- Just because you have a suited hand, this doesn't mean you have a winning hand.
