In the early 1800s, the ideas about equality for women that had been formed in previous centuries finally started to take root. Women began to campaign for more rights and government participation, before ultimately being granted the right to vote in 1920. But 1920 did not mark the end of the Women's Rights Movement. In fact, even in our current society, women are still subjected to unfair wages, stereotypes, and labels. They are pigeonholed into various careers and made to feel inadequate about their skill sets. What can you do to help encourage your fellow Americans to promote equal rights towards women? Read on for tips that will send you on your way to becoming involved with the Modern Women's Rights Movement.
1. Wage War on the Wage Gap
Findings suggest that even as recent as 2006 women earned on average only 77 cents to every dollar earned by men. Unequal wages for equal work is just plain unfair.
2. Support Women in Power
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O'Connor, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Oprah Winfrey, and Martha Stewart are just a handful of the many women who influence our government and impact our society in big ways.
3. Support Other Women's Rights Advocates
There are many Women's Rights groups out there. Make it a point to assist them by whatever means accessible to you.
4. Do Your Homework... Learn Some History
Knowledge really is power. It's never been truer.
5. Read Relevant Message Boards, Forums, and Blogs
Use Google's Blog Search tool to find dozens of relevant blogs. Bloggers are an excellent resource for getting your feet wet on women's issues. Try emailing them directly or search their blog using keywords that interest you the most.
6. Join an Organization
Find a local women's rights group and see if it's a good fit for you. If so, find out what events mesh best with your interests and get involved!
7. Be Heard!
Whether it's starting your own blog, or sharing your thoughts with friends over lunch, get your opinions out there. Let people know where you stand on women's issues.
Great leaders are those individuals who are not afraid to stand up for injustice, despite persecution and inconvenience. Women across the globe deserve to be treated with respect and valued to the same degree as men. And, remember, these tips are just the beginning.
