Tasers have gained much attention in the media as of late, but remain an effective tool for self-defense. They are fast, effective and offer a safer alternative for the persons carrying them over more aggressive methods.

Tasers have gained much popularity for several reasons. Not only are they a non-lethal methods of incapacitating an attacker, they can be fired, just as a gun and hit a target often as far away as twenty feet. Tasers have achieved a notoriety of their own, even though they are similar to the standard stun gun.

Tasers operate on standard batteries easily purchased at any retailer. They are designed to be around the same size as a stun gun and you can use them at a distance as opposed to direct contact.

There are two electrodes at the front of the taser that shoot out once the trigger is pulled. These electrodes have small barbs on the end that will latch onto an attackers clothing and deliver the jolt.

Tasers are commonly used today by police personnel and offer a non-lethal method of calming an escalating situation that might endanger others. The overall design of a taser gun has evolved through the years. Many are now equipped with digital or identification means so any attacker will be identifiable at a later time.

Some tasers are designed to track the time and usage. Some designs give authorities information on where the gun was fired. There are even stun guns that feature dual electrodes. If you miss the first shot, they function just as a regular stun gun.

One of the disadvantages of a taser is they can only be fired once. Tasers are made with a compressed gas cartridge. This is what forces the electrodes out when the trigger is pushed. After a firing, the electrodes will need to be rewound and a new cartridge inserted.

A taser have an effect similar to the stun gun. A jolt of electricity is sent into an attackers body and, as a result, disables them from attacking you. The energy sent from a taster attacks the nervous system. The impact is not reported to be painful, but it does disable.

As with any self-defense mechanism, you should always carefully examine any documentation and retain it for later reference. Proper storage and use should also be a concern. Never store a taser or any other defense item within the reach of children, pets, or out in the open where someone else may take it.

The best places to store your taser will be invisible to all and convenient for you to access. Tasers have voltage rates similar to that of stun guns and should be handled as carefully as you would a typical stun gun.

You should also check to see if education is available in your area for the proper care and maintenance of your product. Many stores specializing in self-defense products will employ individuals who are knowledgeable and trained in the specifications and requirements for operating these items.
