Snowboarders tend to be one of the more individualistic athletes around. For some reason, the sport seems to attract those with iconoclastic traits. Because of this, it is no shock that a lot of snowboarders wish to exhibit individual traits in their snowboarding attire and equipment. And, one way that many choose to do this is by customising their snowboards.
There are various ways to customize a snowboard. But, basically, your choices come down to one of three methods - placing stickers or labels on it, applying a skin to it, or painting it.
For those looking for an easy route, putting stickers on your board is the way to go. Most snowboarders use stickers from various companies. But you first have to determine which company's stickers you want on the board. This can be an aesthetic choice or simply the ones from companies that you would like to be associated with. After that - just write a letter to them expressing your appreciation for their products - and ask them for some stickers.
If you request nicely, many of the companies will be glad to ship you some for no charge. Not only that, but quite a few companies sell stickers which you can find in the arts and crafts stores around your neighborhood. After you receive them, simply attach them to your snowboard. Now, you have customized your board in a very inexpensive manner.
A second, and very popular, way of customizing snowboards is to give it an external skin. What's a snowboard skin? It is simply a thin custom fitted material designed to place over your snowboard. Typically it is made of vinyl. You can purchase pre-designed skins or, if you are creative, you can design skins and customize them with practically any type of images that you like. They usually have a polyurethane finish to protect themselves and to make them easier to maintain.
Finally, painting their snowboard is something that a lot of snowboarders decide on to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Painting is the most complex method of customization. But, in order to pull it off, it helps to have some artistic talent.. When customizing with stickers and skins, all you have to do is to put the pre-made materials onto the board. However, with paint, you need to know how to lay down a prime coat, sand, paint, and polyurethane. Do any of these things badly and you board will look like junk. So, unless you already are practised in these skills, painting a snowboard is probably not the best time to get experience.
If you really want a painted board, however, and you don't have the skills to do it yourself, the simple answer is to hire a graphic artist to design and do one for you. This, of course, is the most expensive option, but in the end, you will probably have a singular and unique snowboard with no other like it.
Whichever customizing technique you choose, however, you can be sure that you will make much more of an impression on the slopes than you will with the standard, vanilla snowboard.
