Wisconsin - A Great Midwest Ski Destination

Thinking of putting together a ski vacation for the family? Why not consider Wisconsin. Although it is true that Wisconsin is, not usually, the first place that comes to mind when you think of skiing, among those who live in the Midwest it has always been one of the favored winter weekend getaways.

One of the function of the National Ski Areas Association is to help promote skiing to various resorts and communities in the country. And recently, they have publicly placed Wisconsin amongst the top three areas to visit in the country if you want to downhill ski. Furthermore, although the state does not have mountains quite the size of those of the largest one in Utah or Aspen, it certainly has quite a few mountains decent enough in size to satisfy most recreational skiers.

Not only that, but if you really enjoy cross country skiing, you will have a hard time finding a place with as many miles of groomed trails in state parks, private resorts, and forests as Wisconsin.

Although you will find many ski resorts opening informally as early as October, late November is when the real season begins - after the snow begins to fall. In years where the snow is late in coming, the ski resorts will only make snow on the most popular of the slopes and keep most of them closed. But, by the time December rolls around, all the slopes on the resorts will normally be open.

When contrasted with other winter activities, skiing is a relatively expensive sport. And, one great thing about skiing in Wisconsin is just how inexpensive it is when compared to some of the more glamorous ski areas. In addition. with so many ski resorts in the area to choose from, it is easy to find the perfect inexpensive ski package for your family.

Each year many people show up at the ski resorts who have never been skiing. Or maybe it's been a long time since they were last on the slopes. Well, not to worry. Nearly all of the larger ski resorts in the state will offer skiing lessons. And, if you are in to snowboarding, quite a few offer snowboarding lessons as well. For those who don't care for skiing or snowboarding, look for ski resorts that offer ice fishing, snowmobiling, sledding, or other winter activities.

In recent years, due to the bad economy, the Wisconsin Ski Industries Association has worked particularly hard to spread the word about the many ski and snowboarding features and facilities available in the state. And, it is starting to pay off. Because of the poor economy, many mid-westerners are no longer taking those week long vacations to Aspen or Canada and are choosing, instead, to stay closer to home and spend their money locally.

For the ski resort owners in Wisconsin and the Midwest, who have suffered through some difficult winters, being a viable alternative is particularly good news.
