The mental image that you have of western wear may be borrowed from movies or images of the working cowboy. From cowboys clad in early rough-hewn western apparel, to the dust and dirt covered riders coming in from weeks on the trail, many of these images lead us to think about dirt and dust, grime and sweat....and not without good cause. Riders really did have to spend several weeks on the cattle trail and it isn't like they had a lot of clothes with them to change into. It's also true that working outdoors, especially with horses and cattle, comes with a fair amount of inescapable dirt. Western movies have capitalized on such imagery as well- romanticizing the dirty yet honor-filled lives of these early western folks. (With a healthy supply of bad guys to make the good guys look all the better, of course.) The very nature of western wear, from the shaping of cowboy boots, to the snap closures on shirts rather than buttons, is functional and safe. That doesn't mean that fashion never factors in, however. In fact, you will find that fashionable and formal western wear comes in many different price ranges and is suited for a wide range of functions- with enough aesthetic variety, there is something for everyone.
You've probably heard of and seen snakeskin cowboy boots. It is pretty obvious that these boots are not actually meant to be worn astride a horse or even just walking through a cow pasture. Snakeskin boots are for being seen in, more than anything else. Dressy western apparel exists because the clothing was and still is part of a culture. There are plenty of events that require nice clothing- whether it is a wedding, a fancy party or even just church on Sunday. There are also those who belong to a wealthier class in western communities and whose fashion demands rank above that of working wear. Of course, you can also look at western apparel, especially cowboy boots, outside of that original western culture and see that it is both widespread and greatly varied. Western wear has hit the fashion runways, it can be seen on movie and music stars, and at least some elements can be found being sold in stores all over the country. Everyday folks wearing cowboy boots and/or cowboy hats is completely normal at all levels of economic standing, background, lifestyle, or community they live in. Certainly there is a fair bit of trickle down that happens every time you see western fashion on the runway or on the big screen. And because it never goes out of style in the west, chances are good that western wear is here to stay.
