Even though reptiles are cold-blooded animals, that does not make them immune to illnesses. In fact, purchasing a reptilian companion costs more the regular household pets and, in addition to that, a snake or iguana owner will have to invest more in preparing his house to accommodate such a pet. Because there are so many cautions you will need to take in order to have a reptile companion, it is imperious that you purchase an insurance policy and get your friend covered. The reptile insurance falls under the category of exotic pet insurance and you should know beforehand that the policy will cost more than common pets insurance.

The main problem with exotic pets and reptiles is that they tend to hide their health problems very well and will only show signs of illness when the disease gets pretty serious. Unlike a cat or dog that will start showing low levels or energy, stop eating or yelp when they are sick, the reptiles will not show the same signs that people are attuned and accustomed to when they have health problems. Nonetheless, reptiles can get the same common illnesses as a cat or a dog, meaning bone diseases, abscesses or parasites for example.

However, the diagnosis and treatment of your reptile companion is expensive and the pet insurance is a great way to be prepared for some of the unexpected bills that come from having these animals as pets. The vet routine check-ups are probably the highest expenses associated with owning a snake or an iguana. One thing you should be careful about is the different levels of coverage. If you want a simple annual or six-month check up for the common reptile illnesses then you will surely find a very cheap insurance policy. However, if you are looking for specific coverage, then you should expect to take more money out of your pocket.

Not many vets feel comfortable treating these animals. Therefore make sure that you find a vet that does not have a problem treating your cold-blooded friend. In addition, you can ask your vet about the insurance company that he or she is working with and try to get a quote from there. When it comes to exotic pet insurance, you should also expect companies that impose you work with a vet that is included in their network. This can be a viable alternative if you are unable to find a vet that can offer your reptile the best care.
