It seems tough for many people to keep a good budget for Christmas. Is there always a need to spend too much during Christmas? Many of us blame Christmas for piled debts in January. Your post-holiday woes can be avoided by having a firm budget plan. Consider budgeting for Christmas as early as August. Sounds ridiculous but this might actually work. So save the complaining and start doing what you can today to make the holidays a little more financially manageable.
Your Christmas budget plan should include how much you would spend for gifts, Christmas cards, decorations, and feast. All these expenses can weigh down on your budget, so you have to plan this right. Tradition says that you are going to spend big time during Christmas but you have to make the right budget plan so that you do not spend more than what you can spend. When your bills pile up after Christmas and you have a hard time paying them, you are spending more than you should. While the holidays are the time when we are supposed to be generous, it does not mean that we should deprive ourselves.
Making a priority list can alleviate that difficult budget. If you have been used to giving Christmas cards to a hundred people last year then limit the list to 50 this year. Perhaps you can start with people who replied to your cards. These are the people who appreciated your thoughtfulness. Your gift list should also be adjusted to include only those people close to you. If you cannot remove anyone from the list, then plan for less expensive gifts. This also applies if you cannot limit your list for Christmas greeting cards. Perhaps you can look for less expensive cards to give to everyone on your list. You can also think of making your own cards using your own stationery set and ribbons and something nice to say.
What will you prepare on the table this Christmas? This should be planned too. Have a list of dishes and snacks that you would put on the table for everyone to help themselves to. If you are inviting people to come to your house to celebrate Christmas, you would have to prepare a grand buffet. Maybe this is not a good idea if you are on a tough budget. Tell people you want to celebrate Christmas just with your family this time. Based on the size of your family, plan the amount of dishes you want to prepare. Either you will cook them yourself or order food from a caterer. Keep in mind that caterers will charge higher during the holidays.
Once you have figured out what you would prepare on the holiday buffet table, creating a shopping list should not be overlooked. The problem is most people hit the grocery stores without their lists. They end up buying more than they need and more than their cash can afford. The result is they use their credit cards instead. Yes, you might have relied too much on that handy piece of plastic which does not come handy at all when it screams the weight of your debt.
Stick with your budget no matter what. All your preparations would be useless if you become tempted to spend more than you should. The whole point of this is discipline. If you do not stick to your shopping list and if you stray from your budget, you would only repeat the same mistakes.
Saving more these holidays does not mean you will go on a stingy budget. It only means you have to cut the old habits and be more aware of how much you spend. That way, you would avoid ghastly debts when all the fun is over.
