If you are a pet owner concerned with the health of your house animal, then you know that you will have to purchase insurance for him in order to be able to cover the medical expenses that might occur. But what happens when you are trying to insure an animal that is suffering from a pre-existing illness? There are not a lot of companies that will agree to insure such a case, due to the high risk involved. Although eventually you will be able to find a company that does, the costs of the premiums will almost certainly be slightly higher.

First of all, you should know that most insurance companies consider that pre-existing conditions fall in two categories: diseases that can be cured and diseases that can not be cured with even the most up to date veterinary medical knowledge.

When you are talking about insurance for animals suffering from a curable disease, such as respiratory or urinary infections, most companies will only offer coverage for the first such event. Afterwards, your pet will have to undergo medical observation for the next year in order to see if the illness reoccurs. If it does not happen again in the aforementioned period, the common company policy is to reinstate the coverage for that disease, although this isn't automatically the case.

This does not go the same for pets unfortunately suffering from incurable conditions. The diseases that cannot be healed with the current medical technology are seen as an unacceptable liability by the insurance companies. Insuring a pet that is very likely to die from conditions such as cancer, allergies or hyperthyroidism would not be a wise investment on the part of the insurer. However, you will be able to obtain coverage for your pet's pre-existing condition, if a more severe disease has developed during the time you were insured. In order to do so, you will need the medical examination of a veterinarian, testifying that the animal was only suffering from a mild condition that has since evolved and become more serious over time.

Insuring pets that suffer from pre-existing conditions is a very complicated process that can be avoided easily. When you purchase a pet, make sure it had a complete check up and does not have any disease. Purchase insurance during the first few days after you become a pet owner in order to avoid all the legal hassle and save a lot of money on expensive treatments.
