If you're trying to learn guitar riffs it is an absolute necessity to teach yourself how to use inflections. Inflections are small nuances that define your guitar playing character. These inflections include hammer-ons, pull-offs, tapping, bends, slides, vibrato etc... If you play guitar without the use of inflections the guitar part will appear unfeeling and stale.

When trying to boost a song inflections are probably the most important fundamentals. This is true for every instrument. Nothing dresses up a guitar piece with emotion like adding slides, and bends.

Bends: Bends are the manipulation of a guitar strings by means of pushing the string or strings on the guitar neck. The middle and ring fingers are the fingers primarily used for bending. Bends include many varieties such as half step bend, the whole step bend, and the bend and release. The distance between frets is a half step. It is possible to acheive this note change by bending the string instead of changing frets. It may seem complex in the beginning nonetheless it is far more practical as far as speed and efficiency are concerned.

Slides: A slide is simply sliding from one fret to another on the same string or strings. It's a cool way to transition linking notes. To correctly implement a slide, continuous downward pressure on the string or strings is needed.

Hammer-ons: A hammer-on is similar to a slide in the effect of using the exact same string but as opposed to sliding to the proper fret you merely hammer hit the next desired fret without striking the string again. Hammer-ons can only be used moving up the guitar neck. When you are moving down the guitar neck it's actually termed a pull-off. To execute a hammer-on you really want to hammer the string or you'll produce a very weak note.

Pull-offs: The pull-off, contrasting the hammer-on, starts on a higher note and pulls off to a lower note. While you are trying a pull-off make sure you pull the string down prior to releasing it almost like you are plucking on the string.

All of these techniques are simple to use but tricky to master. These are just a few of the inflections terrific guitarists like Slash use to add expression to their solos and licks. With practice you can also acheive that individual sound that others will try to emulate.
