Most people will visit Tanzania to go on safari and some want to do it as a hunting safari. Some might think that hunting the big game in Africa has long disappeared, but there are still areas managed to allow people to still get the thrill of big game hunting. Many of these areas are adequately managed and they do take precautions to avoid overhunting, but it is a good idea to research the company before you go to ensure they are legal and being operated responsibly.

There are a variety of opportunities for hunting in Tanzania. For the most part the hunting is done as a Tanzania safari in a somewhat controlled area. There are different lengths of safaris ranging from a few days to even a month.

One of the main things you will want to know when choosing a hunting safari in Tanzania is what game is available to hunt. The available game depends on the location and sometimes you have to take longer safaris to be able to hunt for certain game. Some of the game that can be hunted on the shorter safaris include yellow baboons, buffalo, bushpig, warthog, wildebeest, and Burchell’s zebra. The harder to hunt animals such as sable, roan, porcupine, lion, leopard, hyena, hippo, and elephants require longer hunting safari commitments. Thus plan for a long hunting vacation if you want to go for the trickier, but sometimes more rewarding experience big game.

Some hunting safaris in Tanzania can provide you the firearms to use, but they usually recommend you bring your own that you are used to and comfortable with. Be sure that you check with the airlines and properly pack and check your gun and ammo. Tanzania law currently allows you to bring in up to 3 rifles and 100 rounds per rifle into the country, but make sure you check the most current laws before you leave. Tanzania law does not allow automatic weapons or handguns to be used for hunting.

In order to be able to take certain animal trophies home from your Tanzania hunting experience you need to get a CITES permit issued by the country you plan to export the trophy to. This is important to take care of before your hunting trip. Currently this only applies to leopards and elephants, but make sure you check before booking your trip that there have not been other animals added to the permit needed list to export.
