Close the valve at the cold water side of the heater. Now turn on the valve where you hooked the hose up. Allow the water heater to drain. To speed ahead the draining process open the relief valve on the side of the heater by pulling up on the handle, this will act like a vent and allow the heater to empty quicker.
When the Water Heater looks as if it has drained close up the relief valve (in case you opened it) turn on the cold water valve for 15 seconds while the bottom valve remains wide open. After 15 seconds close the cold water valve once more and allowthe heater to drain. This will flush out any left over sediment on the bottom of the tank. The Tank is now flushed Close up the bottom valve as well as the relief valve. Turn on cold water valve and permit heater to refill before relighting the pilot. In certain case you could possibly experience low pressure at a few of the faucets. This can be caused by sediment in the lines. Disconnect the aerator with the clogged faucet and wipe it out.
